Maths Subject Statement
Maths Leader: Mr Richard Nicholls
At Star our aim is to raise the attainment in mathematics. We believe every learner should develop the skills to be confident mathematically and have a strong conceptual understanding that enables them to successfully apply their knowledge in a range of different contexts preparing them for the world around them and life after North Walsall Primary Academy.
We do this by:
- Encouraging a positive can do attitude and an enjoyment of mathematics!
- Teaching fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
- Allowing opportunities to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships, make generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
- Applying skills to solve problems in a variety of routine and non- routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
- Developing effective mathematical skills by using a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach so that all leaners can make progress.
- Accurately modelling and promoting good mathematical vocabulary relevant to your year
The academy uses White Rose Maths as a foundation for Mathematical concepts and learning journeys. This is an online scheme that teachers use to plan and deliver high quality lessons which incorporate the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach. This is then adapted to suit each cohort to ensure learning is bespoke.
At Star we recognise the value of Mathematical Talk. Teachers are equipped with a range of stem sentences to encourage high quality mathematical talk in the classroom. We provide the children with stem sentences to support their answers when reasoning and problem solving. This has allowed children to communicate their ideas more confidently, precisely and with clarity.
By the end of Year 4 children should know all of their times tables facts up to 12×12. It is now compulsory that all children will sit the Multiplication Times table Check at the end of Year 4. Year 4 Multiplication information please see link below;

We practise times tables through rolling numbers. This is a call and response chanting the times tables while counting off on fingers as we go. The physical movement combined with catchy chants helps to energise the children and supports a faster recall of times tables.
In addition, We also use TTRockstars and Ten Town that can also be accessed at home.
