At Star Academy , we use the National Curriculum and it’s guidance to inform our english aims and attainment targets.
As part of english lessons, high quality texts are linked to enhance the knowledge and understanding of the wider curriculum and opportunities to read and write are purposeful.
To further enhance reading skills and knowledge there is a daily 30 minute reading lesson in key stage 1 and 2.
Home-school reading books pull from a range of schemes such as Dandelion Readers are used in our Early Years Department and for children on lower phonic stage and Big Cat by Collins for key stage 1 and 2. A reading record is provided in which parents are asked to comment. We greatly appreciate the support of parents in this area.
Pupils in our Early years and key stage 1 have a phonics lesson every day which lasts for approximately 20 minutes. Phonics is utilised in all english lessons and children are continually encouraged and prompted to use the phonics skills they have learned.
The academy uses letters and sounds for guidance and to inform aims and objectives.
Spelling and Handwriting
Spelling and handwriting are taught throghout the english and phonics lessons. For spelling pupils may access spelling shed for homework to enhance their skills in this area.
For handwriting the academy follow the ‘Letter join’ scheme.
Within the english blocks, pupils unpick genre types and learn about the grammar styles and composition of the genre. This process is started by using a WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) which is followed by unpicking the features and applying them in their own learning. Pupils have the opportunity to write at length by creating a plan, draft, redraft and create a final write in the genre of the block.
